dont put all your money in annuities. There is no single perfect investment. Life annuities are great for providing an income you cannot outlive but they wont help you with inflation. Gold is great to hedge against inflaiton but will not provide income. Each part of your portfolio should focus on a particular benefit because no single investment will handle them all. A diversified portfolio will cann address all financial threats.

This author has the same plan. Place most of my money in life annuities at age 70 and no longer worry about money as the payment will last as ling as I live. I have no heirs so the residual value is not an issue.

If you are around 70 years old, and purchase a fixed, life time annuity, you can get a 9% annual return, providing you agree to a non-beneficiary clause and no cost of living increases. When you die the insurance company keeps your investment. If you are single and have no heirs, i think it's a no brainer. That 9% annual return is 75% tax free for the 1st 15 years. If you are 75 years old when you purchase the annuity, the rate of return is around 10-11% annually. If you plan on living to 90 or longer, makes a lot of sense. You don't have to worry about any major downturns in the stockmarket or devaluation of the dollar. Certainly would not work for most people. I purchased 6 of them when i turned 70. All of the top insurance companies offer this.

The best thing about annuities is the secured capital, you are guaranteed to receive back your principle investment as well as any profit.

An annuity may be a good part of an investment and retirement strategy, but I definitely don't think it should make up more than a small portion of an overall portfolio.
